How to Start a Business When You Have No Experience

For years, I believed you needed a business background to start a business.

I did not have one. I had an agriculture degree, a classroom full of FFA kids, and a work history that started behind the counter at McDonald's when I was fourteen.

That was the whole résumé.

No sales training.

No marketing degree.

No idea what I was doing that first year (and I mean NONE!).

So if you've been googling how to start a business with no experience and waiting to feel qualified before you begin, here are the five things I'd tell you to do instead. Not theory, these are the actual ones that moved it, and you can start with whichever one you're standing closest to.

We're trained to wait for the credentials. You take the class, you pass the test, somebody hands you a piece of paper, and then you're allowed to go do the thing.

This is not that.

Experience isn't a prerequisite here, it's a byproduct. You don't learn it and then start, you start and then learn it, and that order feels completely wrong for about six months until one day it doesn't!

Thing #1: Start Before You Need It

Start before the money is tight.

Start before you're desperate to leave something.

Start before the unexpected expense shows up and makes the decision for you.

When you build something before it's your only option, you're building from an entirely different place. There's less fear in it. There's less pressure sitting on every single conversation, and people can feel that.

I started mine while I still had a job I loved, and that is exactly why it worked!

Thing #2: Do the Homework Before You Commit

I looked at about ten companies before I settled on one for good.

Ask who's behind it. Ask how the products are actually made. Ask what happens to you in a slow month (and pay attention to whether anybody gets weird about the question!).

Education over pressure isn't just how I sell now, it's how I bought in the first place.

Thing #3: Get Coachable Before You Get Confident

Willing beats qualified every single time.

The people I've watched build something real were rarely the most polished ones.

They were the ones who asked questions, showed up to the calls, and took feedback without getting defensive about it (which is genuinely rarer than you'd think!).

Coachable is a skill.

It's actually the only one you NEED on day one.

Everything else gets built while you're moving. The words, the systems, the confidence, all of it.

Thing #4: Build It in the Cracks

You don't need a free schedule. You need twenty honest minutes.

Early mornings.

Lunch breaks, and the twenty minutes after bedtime before I went back out to check on animals.

My first year was not impressive. I overthought every post, I rewrote messages four times before I sent them, and I saved trainings I never watched because saving them felt productive 😵‍💫

Nobody was watching anyway, that was a gift. I got to be bad at this in private!

Thing #5: Keep Going After It Stops Being New

This is the one everybody skips, and it's the one that separates people.

What eventually changed things for me wasn't a strategy. I wasn't good at it, I was just consistent, and consistency compounds in a way that talent never does.

There's a woman on my team who started with even less business experience than I had, which I honestly didn't think was possible. She didn't have a background, she had a reason. Two years in, she's changed what's possible for her family!

It doesn't have to be pretty.

It has to be repeatable.

Here's the truth: how to start a business with no experience isn't really a how question. It's a willing one.

And listen, I've built something bigger than I ever planned for, and I still spent last night out in the dark checking on sheep (headlamp, muck boots, very glamorous). Nobody out here is impressive!

You are not unqualified.

You are inexperienced, those are two completely different things.

One of them is permanent.

The other one has a fix, and the fix is starting.
